Jeddah – November
23, 2004 - ATCO Ports Management Services (“APMS”) today
announced the delivery and arrival of two (2) new tug boats
for service at the Jeddah Islamic Port, the largest commercial
port in Saudi Arabia.
APMS is a division
of the A.A. Turki Group (“ATCO”), which has operated in
the Saudi port management and marine services field since
1975. As a part of its operations, APMS provides ports
management services to Jeddah Islamic Port (“Jeddah”) and
the Port of Gizan (“Gizan”) pursuant to a 10-year privatization
contract with the Saudi government. Under the contract,
APMS is responsible for the following:

Operating
and maintaining all port marine vessels;
-
Renovating, operating, and maintaining slipways at Jeddah;
-
Operating,
maintaining, and upgrading control tower communications
systems;
-
Heavy
lifting operations;
-
Handling
berthing, unberthing, pilot, salvage, and rescue operations,
including for the Royal Saudi Navy and the Saudi Arabian
Oil Company (“Saudi Aramco”);
-
Oil
pollution control and clean-up;
-
Dredging
in Gizan;
-
Procurement
and deployment of ten (10) navigational buoys;
-
Procurement
and deployment of nine (9) new tugs; and
-
Marketing
of Jeddah and Gizan port services.
APMS awarded a
contract to Cochin Shipyard Ltd. of India for the construction
of the nine (9) tug boats within a three (3) year period.
The tugs are being built under the supervision of the Classification
Society of Det Norske Veritas (“DNV”), with class notations
as “Unrestricted and Unmanned Engine Room”.
The delivered
tugs, named “Jeddah 32” and “Jeddah 33” are multi-purpose
vessels that can be utilized for towing, salvaging, and
firefighting, with on-board cranes capable of handling fifteen
(15) tons of weight. These new vessels are equipped
with Wartsila engines and Rolls Royce “Aqua Master” propulsion
systems. According to Mr. Faisal Alsorouri, Executive
Director, Jeddah Port Project, “the delivery of these tugs
reflects ATCO’s continued commitment to the upgrade of equipment
and services to world-class levels at the ports of Jeddah
and Gizan.”
